Amulet – Moroccan Hamsa
Amulet – Moroccan Hamsa
The hamsa, five in Arabic, is a talismanic form of an outstretched palm, intended to ward off the evil eye and other evil spirits and bring blessings. In Judaism, it is associated with the five books of the Torah and the letter H – five in gematria – which denotes the name of God. In Islam, it symbolizes the hand of Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and her fingers – the five pillars of religion: faith, prayer, charity, fasting and pilgrimage.
This hamsa is a gold-plated replica of a Moroccan synagogue menorah holder from the 18th century. The original object is kept in the Feuchtunger Collection, which was purchased and donated to the Israel Museum by Baruch and Ruth Rapaport, Geneva.
